Blue Devils now primed for ACC Championship
By Ray Hamill
You probably wouldn’t be surprised if I told you Duke could have a big say in this season’s national championship, but I bet it would knock your socks off if I told you I was talking about football.
Well, believe it or not, it’s true, and right about now there are a lot of football fans in Columbus, Palo Alto, Waco, Eugene and Auburn all rooting hard for the Blue Devils.
Why? Because Duke is now officially the best shot any of them have at getting back into the national title picture.
On Saturday, No. 2 Florida State hammered Syracuse 59-3 to improve to 10-0 on the year, as the Seminoles continued to steamroll toward a place in the BCS Championship.
They have just two remaining games in the regular season, against Idaho and Florida, who have a combined 10 straight losses between them and just one win dating back to September.
It’s hard to see the Seminoles, who are averaging 52 points and 521 yards a game, losing either of those contests, which leaves the ACC Championship game as the only remaining potential stumbling block.
And that’s where Duke comes in.
After defeating No. 24 Miami 48-30 on Saturday for their sixth straight win, the Blue Devils improved to 8-2 on the season, and, more importantly, are now top of the ACC Coastal Division, with just two losses, one less than Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Miami.
And that makes the Blue Devils the frontrunners to face Florida State in the ACC Championship.
Can anyone say “Go Blue Devils?”
Fans of Ohio State, Stanford, Baylor, Oregon and Auburn can.
